Communication is one of humanity's biggest problems. We often think we know what the other person is saying but then walk away feeling really confused. At the same time, we are trying not to look certain ways such as stupid, uncool, or otherwise unacceptable. We don't want to be a pest to people so we quiet our voice and choose not to go back to a person to clarify meanings and understandings so that we can strengthen our relationships with each other.
In reality, most of us would not think anything at all if a person came back to clarify, especially if done with a good attitude. And if a person did respond poorly, most likely it is due to a bad day or the hustle and bustle of our society.
A woman wrote that her instructor told her she was trying in vain. She didn't understand if he was complimenting her or complaining to her about her work.

Here's my response:
It sounds like he was explaining to you why you got a 'B' instead of an 'A'. It's hard to say what he meant though. If it's really bothering you, ask him the next time you see him, what he meant by it. Just say you are a little confused. Or you could say that after thinking about the conversation it made you have questions and would it be okay to talk about it again.
Most teachers will understand this.
Good luck!
After she received this from me she said that she got the highest grade in the class. So I think he was telling her that she was trying in vain because nobody was getting an A in the class.
Never be afraid to ask questions even if people ridicule you or berate you for it. It is your life and the better understanding you have with others, the more enjoyable life is for you. Obviously it's great to always have a positive attitude with people, even if they are negative. But ultimately, we are all just human. Do your best!
Have you had a time where you were really confused by what someone said? What did you do about it?
